Weekly Parent Letter
Parent Letter - January 30th

Parent Letter – January 30th 2012

Thank you so much for attending Open House and our School Mass! It was also wonderful to see so many families at the Spaghetti Feed! This is a very exciting week as it is Catholic Schools Week! The schedule for Catholic Schools Week will be as follows:

·      Monday – Service Day, the second graders will take a walking field trip to clean up trash in our neighborhood.

·      Tuesday will be Staff and Parent Appreciation day.

·      Wednesday will be Student Appreciation day. Students will be able to wear free dress! It is also a 1:30 dismissal day.

·      Thursday will be St. Felicitas day. Students should wear red and white.

·      Friday is Special Person’s Day. Special People may arrive with students for morning assembly. Dismissal will be at 12:00.

Reading groups will change around this week. We will practice reading routines and get used to our new groups. During the next two weeks students will be working on the same sort. The sort homework will also be the same this week and next. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your support!

Homework- Week of January 9th
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Attached you will find the first homework packet for the second trimester. Please return Monday’s homework on Tuesday, Tuesday’s homework on Wednesday, Wednesday’s homework on Thursday, and Thursday’s homework on Friday. It is important that students return the homework on the correct day. We will not be accepting homework that is turned in early. If you are unable to complete a homework page please send a note to school with your child.
If your child gets frustrated please stop for a little bit and go back to it later. If it is late in the evening, please send me a note, and your child may complete the homework the next night or over the weekend. I urge you to encourage your child to complete the homework in a timely manner and not make unfinished homework a habit (as some students do need extra encouragement in completing homework ). Homework should not take longer than 30 minutes, although each child is different.
Math homework: We would love students to know their math facts without using fingers or manipulatives (although I know some students may need to use cubes, counters, etc.) If your child completes the math facts sheet quickly, you can challenge your child by putting a timer on and having them complete the worksheet in 1 minute, 45 seconds, 30 seconds, etc. or asking them their math facts verbally and seeing how quickly they can answer all 30 problems.
Spelling: Please complete the spelling activities in the homework book we were using as a homework journal. We would like to use these books until they are full and will issue a new one when these are done.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the homework.

Thank you!

God Bless,
Rebecca Hearne

Parent Orientation Letter

August 22,2011

Dear Second Grade Parents/Guardians,

My name is Rebecca Hearne and I am very excited for the opportunity to work with you and your children this year. As a parent, I realize that it takes a very deep level of trust to share your children. I take your trust very seriously, and I will do my very best to treat each of your children as I would my own. I feel very blessed to be a part of the St. Felicitas community.

I am a graduate of Saint Mary’s College. I received my Bachelor of Arts and my Teaching Credential from Saint Mary’s, as well as my Master’s Degree in Teaching. I taught second grade at Burbank Elementary School and this will be my third year teaching second grade at St. Felicitas. I love teaching at St. Felicitas because I not only get to share my love of learning with my students, but also my faith in Christ.

My philosophy of education is one that strives to teach to the individual child. We all learn at different paces and in different ways. I hope to challenge the students who need challenging and support those students who need extra help in certain subject areas. I believe in teaching the whole child. This means that I will not simply teach in a teacher-directed manner, but instead I hope to find out what interests each child and find ways to spark that interest. I have a passion for reading and writing, and I completed my Master’s Thesis on differentiated reading strategies for individual students. I look forward to working with your child in all subject areas.

Second grade is a very important year for your child, as he/she will prepare to receive their Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. We are very blessed to have Mrs. Cronin teaching Religion this year! You will receive more information about the Sacramental Program in the weeks that follow.

The success of a child’s education is dependent upon the cooperation between parents, teachers, and the entire school community. Remember to read letters sent home, support your child in the completion of his/her homework, read with your child every day, and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. My door is always open and I look forward to getting to know you. Thank you for taking the time to come to Parent Orientation.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Hearne
